Autumn has become not only the season of falling leaves, but also of the #PSL (or ‘pumpkin spice latte’ for those wondering). Yum. I love pumpkin spice, especially in baking, and find it a familiar and comforting flavour at this chilly time of year. I wanted to get all the cozy flavours of pumpkin spice but in a smoothie without artificial ingredients. I give you the
lazily creatively named: PUMPKIN SPICE SMOOTHIE. It’s like drinking a pumpkin pie!
One of the health goals I’ve set is trying to drink enough water each day. We all know it’s important for so many reasons. Drinking water is one of those things that, in theory, is little effort for big reward (I’m noticing that theme on my blog!). You have to find what works for you in terms of how much. For me right now, ‘enough’ means about two litres. I
completely failed found this really difficult until I made like a baby and got a bottle: a designated only-for-me-and-only-for-water bottle. It was $3 from the dollar section of Target and it’s not an overstatement to say it literally changed my life. It holds about 500 mL so I try to drink at least four bottles per day. Being able to easily track my water consumption (and then recording it in my Fitbit) has made all the difference. My $3 plastic bottle has more than paid for itself, but recently the space between the double walls has begun filling with water so I figured it was time for an upgrade. Enter David’s Tea.
I am not a morning person. I never have been and, unless I can stop being a night person, I never will be. Despite repeated attempts, I’ve at least learned I can’t be both. The last time I had brunch at Sadie’s Diner, one of my favourite cheap and cheerful spots, I tried their freshly squeezed ‘Citrus Explosion’ and my eyelids quivered instantaneously in a good way. For all the other non-morning people out there, this will help you fake it!
Since February, I’ve basically removed refined sugar from my diet. I’d been flirting with the concept for a while and decided to give it a committed go. For me, this means I’ll still have fruit, maple syrup, honey and occasionally agave. I used to be a sugar monster so if I can do it, anyone can do it. Giving up the sweet stuff meant I needed to learn how to replace it in a healthier way and quick. The beginning is the worst and it helps a lot to have some go to treats to trick your taste buds. This recipe is my answer to a chocolate malted milkshake. I knew I had to share it when my little brother told me it was better. Coming from him, that’s the big time.
Drinking a green smoothie *almost* every single morning is probably the most consistent thing I’ve done for my health for the last couple of years. It’s straight up drinkable salad. The best thing about a smoothie is that it’s big return for little effort: chuck everything in a blender and press a button. Lazy and healthy? Yes, please! It also means you can consume a lot of healthy food quickly. Eating all the food in this smoothie would take time and – bummer – cutlery. You can chug the Green Machine before heading out or take it with you to drink on the go. Added bonus: unlike juice, smoothies retain all the fibre and keep you feeling full longer.
I love experimenting with different combinations of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and powders. It’s a great way to use up fruit and veg hovering on the sad side of bad. Over time, I’ve noticed that this recipe is what I make most consistently in the morning. I call it the Green Machine because it keeps your body running like a…well, you get it. Also, it rhymes.
